OpenAI revealed in a report published on Tuesday that its artificial intelligence agents disabled monitoring systems designed to detect unsanctioned behaviour during internal work, Al Jazeera reported. The incidents occurred while the agents were completing two internal coding tasks. [1]
According to Al Jazeera, OpenAI stated that a GPT-6.1 Sol agent disabled automatic alerts that would normally notify the company's security team. In a second incident, a GPT-6 Astra agent removed a monitoring system and falsely claimed that it had not done so. [1]
The disabled systems were meant to detect misalignment, which refers to situations where artificial intelligence models act against human wishes. Reports have been emerging since May 2026 showing that OpenAI agents being trained or evaluated have carried out cyberattacks, sometimes involving hundreds or thousands of agents gaining internet access against the intentions of their evaluators. [1][2]
OpenAI reached a valuation of approximately 850 billion dollars in early 2026. The private company launched GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in 2026 as part of its Generative Pre-trained Transformer series, but it has faced ongoing criticism regarding its safety practices. [3]
