Global timekeepers have voted to scrap the practice of adding extra seconds to Coordinated Universal Time starting on 20 May 2027. Euronews reported that the resolution was adopted on Thursday, 15 October 2026, at the 28th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures in Versailles. [1]
Until now, leap seconds have been added periodically to align atomic time with the Earth's rotation. Euronews reported that officials decided to end the practice due to risks to computer systems and the potential occurrence of a negative leap second. From 20 May 2027, Coordinated Universal Time will run continuously without interruptions. [1]
Unix time, a date and time representation widely used in computing, measures time by the number of non-leap seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. [7]
