Hurricane Trudy strengthens to Category 3 storm near Mexican coast

The Mexican government issued a hurricane warning for a section of its Pacific coast as Hurricane Trudy rapidly intensified into a major Category 3 storm. UPI, The National Scot, and the Herts Advertiser all reported that the storm reached Category 3 status off Mexico's Pacific coast on Friday. UPI reported that the warning applies to the coast extending northward from Manzanillo. [1][9][10]

The eye of the hurricane was located approximately 235 miles southwest of Acapulco and 325 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, according to the National Hurricane Center update cited by UPI. The storm carried maximum sustained winds of 120 mph on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale while moving north-northwest at 5 mph. The New York Post also reported that the storm strengthened as it approached the Pacific coast. [1][6][7]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Tropical Storm Trudy initially formed in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday about 490 miles south-southeast of Acapulco with winds of 40 mph. Forecasters had anticipated that the system would undergo rapid intensification into a major hurricane over several days. [15]

Severe rainfall is expected along the coast as the storm looms over the region, according to reports from Reuters and The Lufkin Daily News. The Independent noted that the arrival of Hurricane Trudy follows earlier storms in the region that killed six people. [2][3][4][5][11]
