Porto and Lisbon top Europe friendliest city ranking for 2026

Porto has been voted Europe's friendliest city in the 2026 Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards, with Lisbon taking second place.

Porto has been voted the friendliest city in Europe, while Lisbon took second place in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2026, Euronews, AOL.com, and IndexBox reported. The annual vote aims to identify cities where hospitality is at its warmest. [1][3][4]

Euronews reported that Portuguese hospitality has repeatedly won over international travellers. International studies and surveys frequently place Portuguese people at the top of tourist preferences, making the country widely recognised for its welcoming culture. [1]

Porto is the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon and serves as the capital of the Porto District. The municipality covers 41.42 square kilometres and has an estimated municipal population of 273,476 people. Situated in northern Portugal on the Douro River estuary, Porto sits about 280 kilometres north of Lisbon. [6][9]

Travel between the two top-ranked cities will soon become much faster. As FTMQ News reported earlier, construction began on 12 October 2026 on a high-speed railway connecting Lisbon and Porto. Once completed, the new line will cut travel times between the two cities to 75 minutes. [10]
