Spanish officials late Sunday confirmed the nationalities of most of the victims of a deadly high-speed train crash in central Spain, identifying four Americans among the deceased. UPI and CBS News both report that at least 69 people were killed in the collision, which occurred on the morning of October 28 in Urda, within the province of Toledo. [1][2]
The crash happened when a high-speed train struck the rear of another train that had stopped, according to CBS News. In addition to the four American citizens, CBS News reported that the victims identified by Spanish authorities include one citizen each from Canada, Japan, Argentina, Mexico, Tunisia, and the Czech Republic. More than 180 people were injured in the disaster, UPI reported. [1][2]
The legal body handling victim identification in Spain, identified by UPI as the Integrated Data Center and by CBS News as the Center for Integrated Data, stated that 66 of the deceased have been formally identified. Out of those identified, 54 were Spanish nationals and 12 were foreign citizens. Officials noted that the three remaining victims to be identified are also believed to be foreign nationals, UPI reported. [1][2]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, the collision suspended high-speed rail services south of Madrid toward Ciudad Real, Seville, and Andalusia. The disaster follows an earlier train derailment in Adamuz, Cordoba, in January 2026 that killed 46 people, making the Toledo crash the deadliest railway accident in Spain since 2013. [8][10]
