Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has taken a thin lead over incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, according to reports by DW, RTE, and The Guardian. Neither candidate secured an outright majority, forcing the race into a second round. [1][2][4]

RTE reported that the result defied opinion poll projections that had put Lula ahead, with Flavio Bolsonaro receiving around 47 percent of the vote compared to 45 percent for the incumbent. France 24 and RTE both reported that the runoff vote will take place on October 25. [1][5]

Flavio Bolsonaro is a right-wing senator and the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, France 24 and RTE reported. Lula da Silva, a former metalworker and trade unionist, has served as president of Brazil since 2023 and previously held office from 2003 to 2011. [1][5][14][15]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, both candidates had concluded their initial campaigns in Sao Paulo on Saturday ahead of the tight contest. NPR reported that the upcoming runoff has set the stage for a highly polarized race that officials in Washington are watching closely. [3][15]
