Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro traded insults and personal attacks during their first face-to-face presidential debate on Sunday, October 18. Reports from DW, Al Jazeera, South China Morning Post, and France 24 noted that the televised face-off took place just one week before the scheduled October 25 election runoff. [1][3][4][5][8]

The candidates called each other liar multiple times during the debate, according to reporting by Al Jazeera, Le Monde, and Arab News. Al Jazeera reported that Lula called Bolsonaro a thug, a militiaman, and a habitual liar, while physically distancing himself on stage. DW added that the exchanges began with discussions on the economy, public security, corruption, and relations with the United States, before devolving into personal insults. DW also noted that the candidates debated Bolsonaro's ties to United States President Donald Trump. [1][3][9][10]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, Flavio Bolsonaro previously led incumbent President Lula in the first round of the presidential vote. DW reported that Bolsonaro finished nearly two percentage points ahead of Lula in that initial round earlier in the month. [1][16]

The debate comes ahead of a closely contested presidential runoff scheduled for October 25, as cited by DW, Al Jazeera, South China Morning Post, and France 24. [1][3][4][5]
