Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro declared himself the leader of Brazil after arriving in Florida on Wednesday following his defeat in Sunday's presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Fox News and France 24 reported that Bolsonaro flew to the United States after Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered his passports to be seized, with France 24 noting that the court deemed him a flight risk amid corruption investigations. [1][3][12][15]

Fox News reported that Bolsonaro traveled to Florida through Argentina. However, as FTMQ News reported earlier, Argentine authorities denied that Bolsonaro had entered their country after Brazilian police contacted them to investigate the claims. [1][16]

BBC News and Fox News both reported that Bolsonaro denied fleeing Brazil, with BBC News reporting that he called himself a victim of political persecution and alleged electoral fraud. Fox News further reported that Bolsonaro accused officials of stealing the election and establishing a tyranny. The Latin Times added that Bolsonaro subsequently revised his claim of being the elected president to declare himself the opposition leader from Miami. [1][2][6]

Bolsonaro is a lawyer and conservative politician who has served as a senator for Rio de Janeiro since 2019 and is a son of former President Jair Bolsonaro. As FTMQ News reported earlier, his father remains under house arrest in Brazil after attempting to overturn a previous election, while a United States State Department official confirmed that Flávio Bolsonaro and his family would receive U.S. visas.
