United States President Donald Trump stated on Monday that the Brazilian presidential election over the weekend looked rigged, according to Euronews, Reuters, Bloomberg, and Le Monde. Donald Trump provided no evidence for the assertion after leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated right-wing candidate Flávio Bolsonaro. Donald Trump told reporters that the vote looked terrible and said that elections have to be indisputable. [1][2][4][8][11][12]

Flávio Bolsonaro initially refused to recognise the victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Euronews and the New Hampshire Union Leader reported. Flávio Bolsonaro said that acknowledging the outcome was impossible and that the vote should have been annulled, but he has since stated that he will organise the opposition. [1][6]

The election outcome denies Donald Trump a powerful regional ally and bucks a broader shift to the right across South America, according to reports from AP News, CNN, and Euronews. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the runoff election between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro took place following campaign promises regarding international military and anti-cartel coalitions. Brazil has the largest economy in Latin America, with a nominal gross domestic product of approximately 2.64 trillion dollars as of 2026. The nation hosts roughly 60 percent of the Amazon rainforest and borders every South American country except Chile and Ecuador. [13]
