The Democratic Party has secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the United States midterm elections on Tuesday, according to the Washington Examiner and the BBC. The Washington Examiner reported that Democrats also reclaimed several governorships, flipping control of Congress and building a deep bench of political talent. [1][8]

France 24 reported that Democrats notched early victories by flipping a Republican-held Senate seat and making inroads in conservative House districts. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war in Iran was a factor that contributed to the Democratic sweep, according to reports from The Washington Post, the Washington Times, and Reuters. [4][6][7][9]

In local contests, Democratic socialist Janeese Lewis George won the mayoral race in Washington, D.C. Fox News reported that the 38-year-old D.C. councilmember captured nearly 85 percent of the ranked-choice vote against Green Party candidate Robert Gross and independent candidate Rhonda Hamilton, based on data from the District of Columbia Board of Elections. Fox News added that she signaled an openness to working with the Trump administration. [2][3]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the midterm elections took place on November 3, 2026, with 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats being contested. Prior to the vote, Republicans held a 53 to 47 majority in the United States Senate. [14][15]
