Nineteen-year-old Democrat Daniel Darris-O’Connor has defeated eight-term Republican incumbent Marc Lombardo to win a seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, according to the New York Post and Inshorts. The victory took place on Tuesday during the midterm elections. Darris-O’Connor will represent the 22nd Middlesex District, a seat Lombardo held since Darris-O’Connor was four years old. [1][8][9][10]

Darris-O’Connor is from the suburb of Billerica near Boston, the New York Post reported. Speaking to The Boston Globe, he acknowledged that he was a younger candidate than most, but stated he was not running solely as the young candidate. He will become one of the youngest representatives ever elected to the Massachusetts state legislature. [1][8]

The Massachusetts House of Representatives serves as the lower house of the Massachusetts General Court and convenes at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. It consists of 160 members elected from single-member districts across the state. [12]

The New York Post reported that the victory occurred alongside nationwide Democratic gains during the midterm elections, which saw previously safe Republican seats flipped at multiple levels. The Guardian reported that Democrats secured control of the United States Congress following historic victories across the country. [1][2]
