US multinational Daktronics has announced that it will close its manufacturing plant in Ennistymon, County Clare, resulting in the loss of 100 jobs. The Irish Examiner and RTÉ both reported on Wednesday that the company notified its Irish employees that it will begin a phased exit and cease operations over the next 12 months. Clare Echo and Clare FM also reported the planned closure. [1][2][3][4]
According to RTÉ, the company is exiting the highly customised segment of its international transportation business. This division supplies digital display and control systems to rail, bus and roadway customers outside North America. The Irish Examiner noted that Daktronics had previously warned last month that it was considering leaving this sector outside of North America. [1][2]
Daktronics was founded in 1968 by South Dakota State University engineering professors Aelred Kurtenbach and Duane Sander. The company went public in 1983 and trades on the NASDAQ stock exchange under the ticker symbol DAKT. [7]
The Ennistymon facility specialises in control system and digital display technology used across transportation networks. The Irish Examiner reported that the planned exit will take place in phases over the coming year until operations fully cease. [1]
