Trade unions have announced that workers across all former Ilva steel sites in Italy will go on strike on 12 October, Euronews reported. The decision followed a meeting between union representatives and the Italian government at Palazzo Chigi on Thursday. [1]
The industrial action comes as steelmaker Acciaierie d'Italia announced a suspension of production at its facility in Taranto, according to Euronews. Production at the hot end of the Taranto steelworks was halted on Friday pending a ruling from the Supreme Court of Cassation in Italy. [1]
Acciaierie d'Italia also plans to temporarily shut down operations at its plants in Genoa and Novi Ligure by 15 November, Euronews reported. The planned closures leave more than 2,000 workers in Italy at risk of losing their jobs. [1]
The steel manufacturer ILVA S.p.A. operates out of Taranto and was Italy's largest steel producer for much of the 20th century, as well as one of the largest steel producers in Europe. [2]
