The Court of Appeal has overturned a decision that halted a major project to upgrade Northern Ireland's A5 road, according to RTE and the Derry Journal. RTE and ITVX reported that the court ruling quashed a High Court decision from last year that stopped work on the road. [1][6][9]
RTE reported that the planned project involves a 1.7 billion pound upgrade to construct a new dual carriageway along the entire 85-kilometre route. The road stretches from County Derry to the County Monaghan border at Aughnacloy. [1]
According to RTE, the Irish Government has pledged more than 600 million euros to fund the scheme. The road has been described as the most dangerous road in Ireland, with 57 people dying in crashes along the route over the past 18 years. [1]
The Chair of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council welcomed the Court of Appeal's decision regarding the A5 Western Transport Corridor, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council reported. Last year, a High Court judge had stopped the project after finding insufficient evidence that it met Stormont's legal requirements, according to RTE. [1][8]
