The Court of Appeal in Belfast has begun hearing a legal challenge mounted by Garvaghy Road residents against a decision permitting an Orange Order march, according to The Journal and The Irish Times. Denise Kiley KC, representing the residents, told the court on Monday that the Drumcree parade is one of the most polarising parades in the history of Northern Ireland. [1][2][3]
According to The Journal, Kiley argued that the Parades Commission failed to explain its determination to allow the parade. She stated that the commission has a duty to explain its decisions, especially because this was the first time in 28 years that the march had not been banned. The Journal reported that members of the music group Kneecap earlier visited people gathered at Garvaghy Road to show support for the local residents. [2]
Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom located in the north-east of the island of Ireland. As FTMQ News reported earlier, a standoff over the Drumcree parade in Portadown entered its second week after the Parades Commission permitted the Orange Order to march along Garvaghy Road, leading to rival rallies and a major security operation by police.
