A fresh legal challenge against a planned Orange Order march in Portadown is set to be heard at the Court of Appeal in Belfast on Monday. The Journal, The Irish Times, and BreakingNews.ie reported that lawyers for the Garvaghy Road Residents Coalition are seeking to overturn a ruling allowing the parade. [1][2][7]

The Journal reported that legal representatives for the residents argue the Parades Commission materially misdirected itself regarding a police assessment on potential disorder. The group also contends that the commission failed to give an accurate representation of evidence received from police. The parade was originally scheduled for last Sunday morning. [1]

Residents in the largely nationalist area oppose the parade, supported by Sinn Féin, the SDLP, and People Before Profit. The Journal, the Irish Independent, and the BBC reported that hip-hop group Kneecap visited the Garvaghy Road to show support for the residents. As FTMQ News reported earlier, protests previously blocked the planned march. [1][4][6][11]

The Drumcree standoff involves an annual parade dispute in Portadown, County Armagh. The town has a majority Protestant population alongside a Catholic minority, where residents in Catholic areas have long opposed Orange Order marches through their neighborhood as sectarian and triumphalist. [9]
