China imposed sanctions on October 12 against two sitting Cabinet ministers from countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, UPI reported. The targets of the measures were Gustavo Villate, Paraguay's minister of information and communications technology, and Francis Fonseca, Belize's foreign minister. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated that the sanctions were intended as a warning to other nations. [1]

The United States Department of State responded to the actions, according to UPI. Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said the Trump administration opposes coercion and aggression by China against countries in the hemisphere that are exercising their sovereign rights. [1]

The actions mark the first time Beijing has sanctioned serving Cabinet ministers of Taiwan's diplomatic partners, UPI reported. Taiwan maintains de facto independence following the retreat of the Republic of China government to the island after the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949, which led to the establishment of the People's Republic of China on the mainland. [1][4]

The sanctions follow earlier financial debates regarding Taiwan's diplomatic partners in Latin America. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Taiwan requested roughly 150 million dollars for Latin American and Caribbean programs in its proposed 2027 foreign affairs budget as Paraguay assessed the economic implications of maintaining its ties with Taipei.
