United States Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker assured European allies on October 12, 2026, that Washington remains committed to the defense of Europe. Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in the Polish capital, Whitaker told European Commissioner for Defence Andrius Kubilius that there is no love lost between Washington and Brussels, Euronews reported. His remarks come during an ongoing military review by the United States that involves withdrawing thousands of troops and strategic assets from the continent. [1]

Euronews reported that Whitaker framed the United States troop reductions within a new model known as NATO 3.0. This framework, supported by Washington, calls on European nations to take the lead with their conventional defenses as American forces draw down on the continent. Whitaker told European allies that the United States is not stepping back from its security commitments. [1]

NATO was originally formed to maintain deterrence through integrated military structures, preventing direct superpower conflict in Europe during the Cold War. As FTMQ News reported earlier, NATO members pledged a target to spend up to 5 percent of their gross domestic product on military defense. [9][11]

The remarks by the United States ambassador come as additional European media outlets, including Bloomberg and Ukrayinska Pravda, reported that NATO commanders and officials are urging European governments to increase support for Ukraine and prepare for potential threats and hybrid actions from Russia.
