Blizzard is moving Overwatch hero Sombra to a support role

Blizzard Entertainment is changing the damage hero Sombra into a support role for season 5 of Overwatch, Polygon reported. Polygon said that the shift is one of the most radical hero reworks in the ten-year history of the hero shooter game. Polygon noted that Sombra has been a problematic hero for the developers for years, leading to the decision to execute a major overhaul. [1]

According to Polygon, the upcoming character changes have proven controversial among the community, as some Sombra mains are not thrilled about becoming a healer. Overwatch associate game director Alec Dawson told Polygon in an interview at BlizzCon 2026 that it has been a long road to rework Sombra. Dawson explained that her lethality and aggressive play style are not changing despite the role shift. [1]

Dawson told Polygon that the soul of Sombra remains intact under the new design. He added that he believes her new support role will start to click with players once they spend some time playing as her in the game. Overwatch features a varied lineup of playable characters, including the hero Soldier: 76, who is voiced by American voice actor Fred Tatasciore. [1][2]
