Jagex announces new RuneScape MMO built in Unreal Engine

Video game developer Jagex has announced a fourth massively multiplayer online game in the RuneScape franchise during the RuneFest event in Birmingham, England. IGN and Polygon both report that the new game is currently in early development using Unreal Engine, with IGN noting that a release is not expected for at least a few years. [1][2][8]

The upcoming title is using RS4 as a working title. Polygon reported that RuneScape: Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America explained that the project was originally intended to be an expansion for Dragonwilds titled Shadows of Ashenfall, but was pivoted after players requested more social mechanics. In addition to the game, Jagex announced an animated adaptation in partnership with content creator MoistCr1TiKaL, according to reports from IGN and Wccftech. [1][4]

First released in January 2001, RuneScape is set in the medieval fantasy world of Gielinor, where players train skills, complete quests, and participate in open ended activities. [1][7]
