Jagex reveals RuneScape 4 development at RuneFest 2026 event

Video game developer Jagex has announced that a fourth main RuneScape game is currently in development using Unreal Engine.

Video game developer Jagex has announced a fourth RuneScape massively multiplayer online game at its RuneFest 2026 event in Birmingham. Both IGN and Polygon reported that the new title is currently in development using Unreal Engine. While RS4 is a working title, Jagex has not officially named the game. [1][2]

According to Polygon, RuneScape: Dragonwilds executive producer Jesse America revealed during a virtual briefing that RuneScape 4 was originally conceived as an expansion for Dragonwilds titled Shadows of Ashenfall. Development shifted toward a traditional Jagex format after players requested more social mechanics in the survival title. [2]

IGN reported that the new title is designed to utilize modern technology and design practices to create a next-generation game. The company did not share a release date for the project, but IGN and Polygon both confirmed that a teaser trailer was shown at the event. [1][2]
