Attorneys for United States Representative Ilhan Omar have asked the Department of Justice to return property removed from her home by federal agents, according to The Guardian. The lawyers contended that the search and seizure were neither justified nor lawful. The Guardian reported that the lawyers also asked for the preservation of any recordings made during the search. [1]
The federal search is part of a criminal investigation into potential immigration fraud, Fox News and the New York Post reported. Fox News added that agents seized a phone, computers, and a passport from her Washington home. According to the New York Post, Omar also faces a separate investigation regarding her financial disclosures. [2][4][6]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, federal agents executed a pre-dawn search warrant at her Washington-area home on October 12, 2026. President Donald Trump criticized Omar at a campaign rally in Ohio hours after the raid, though he denied personal involvement in the federal probe. Omar called the search part of an intimidation campaign. [13][14]
Amid the fallout from the search, Omar's older sister, Sahra Noor, skipped a scheduled book tour event at the University of Minnesota Rochester due to a family emergency, the New York Post and Fox News reported. Fox News reported that Noor skipped the event after reportedly receiving a subpoena in the immigration fraud probe into her sister. [2][4]
Omar is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives representing Minnesota's 5th congressional district, which includes Minneapolis. She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1982 and is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. The investigation was launched weeks ahead of the November 3 midterms, in which Omar is on the ballot, according to The Guardian. [1][11][12]
