The United States government has begun quiet diplomatic talks with Myanmar's military-backed government, DW reported. State Department representative Michael Vance met with Myanmar officials in Naypyitaw and then in Tokyo earlier this month, following an initial round of discussions in September. [1]

According to DW, Washington is seeking to address online scam centers operating in the region. The United States also aims to secure the release of imprisoned American businessman Adam Castillo and potentially gain access to rare-earth resources in Myanmar. [1]

The diplomatic engagement comes after the Myanmar military seized power in a coup on 1 February 2021. The takeover sparked widespread anti-coup protests and a violent military crackdown that escalated ongoing internal conflict across the country. [2]

The recent discussions by the United States, alongside renewed diplomatic contacts from several Southeast Asian nations, have put pressure on the European Union regarding its ongoing diplomatic boycott of the junta, DW reported. [1]
