Incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has won re-election in Brazil's presidential runoff, according to reports from the Guardian and BBC News. Lula da Silva defeated far-right rival Flávio Bolsonaro, who refused to recognise the election result. The victory follows a first round in which Lula da Silva trailed his opponent before securing the win in the second round. [1][2]
The South China Morning Post reported that former Chilean diplomat Jorge Heine called the election result a major turning point for Latin America and United States relations. Hein predicted that Lula da Silva's re-election will slow Washington's regional push and mark a setback for efforts to assert American primacy in the region. BBC News noted that Trump did not explicitly endorse Flávio Bolsonaro, though Trump was a close ally of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro. [2][3]
Lula da Silva previously stated about a year ago that he had no relationship with Trump and no intention of calling him, BBC News reported. At the time, relations had cooled significantly after Trump imposed punitive tariffs on Brazilian goods. However, BBC News noted that while the relationship between the two leaders has recently thawed, multiple issues could reignite political tensions. [2]
Lula da Silva, a former metalworker and trade unionist, is a member of the Workers' Party who served as president from 2003 to 2011 before taking office again as president in 2023. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Lula da Silva won approximately 51.7 percent of the vote in the runoff, making him the first Brazilian presidential candidate to win a runoff election after trailing in the initial round.
