The United States Department of the Treasury removed Theint Win Htet from its sanctions list on Friday, Al Jazeera reported. She is the daughter of a Myanmar businessman who was accused of supporting the military installed government. Her delisting occurred after she filed a lawsuit against the United States Treasury in July. [1]
According to Al Jazeera, the removal of sanctions came after reports that the administration of United States President Donald Trump reopened talks with the government of Myanmar. The step marks a change from long standing United States policy that penalised the generals responsible for overthrowing Myanmar's democratically elected government in 2021. [1]
Myanmar experienced a brief democratic opening beginning in 2011, which allowed civilian rule under the National League for Democracy. However, the military seized control of the country through a coup in 2021. [3]
