The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control deployed a team of experts to Nigeria on Tuesday, Euronews reported. The deployment comes as Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo passed 10,000. Euronews, Al Jazeera, France 24, DW, and Sky News all reported that total confirmed infections in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have surpassed 10,000. [1][2][3][4][5]
According to data from the Ministry of Public Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo cited by Al Jazeera and DW, confirmed cases reached 10,060 and total deaths stood at 4,887. Al Jazeera noted that nearly half of all confirmed patients have died. DW reported that the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention classified the crisis as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak in the history of the country. [2][4]
France 24 and DW reported that the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo species of the Ebola virus. Both outlets stated that there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments available for this specific virus strain. [3][4]
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control team in Nigeria is led by its senior expert in epidemic intelligence, Euronews reported. The experts will provide technical support to the European Union delegation in Abuja and assist Nigerian authorities with disease surveillance. The virus continues to spread internationally, following reports by PBS NewsHour and the South China Morning Post that a Swiss woman receiving treatment for Ebola in Nigeria was evacuated to Switzerland with her husband. [1][6][7]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, the outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026. Cases have since expanded across the continent, with Nigeria becoming the fourth African nation to report infections alongside Kenya. [1][13][14]
