Ukrainian military air defence units experienced a slight drop in drone interception rates after disruptions affected Starlink satellite services, Euronews and Business Insider reported. According to Euronews, citing the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine's interception rate fell from 77 percent to approximately 74 percent during the disruption. However, Euronews reported that some units achieved interception rates of around 80 percent against Russian jet-powered drones using improved interceptor technology. [1][8]
The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukraine's military Starlink service is working again, while Reuters cited Ukrainian sources stating Starshield is back to normal. SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk accused Ukraine of violating terms with drone strikes, according to Reuters and Ars Technica. Musk stated that a loophole had been closed following the restrictions, The Independent reported. [2][6][11][12]
Democratic lawmakers in the United States demanded clarification from Musk regarding the satellite shutdown, the Washington Examiner and CNN reported. Senators Adam Schiff and Peter Welch, alongside Representative Gregory Meeks, questioned whether Musk personally ordered restrictions on Ukrainian forces and raised concerns over geopolitical risks surrounding private tech control, according to the Washington Examiner. [3][4][7]
Shahed drones are unmanned combat aerial vehicles developed by Shahed Aviation Industries and deployed by Russian forces against Ukraine. Starlink is a telecommunications subsidiary of SpaceX operating thousands of low Earth orbit satellites. As FTMQ News reported earlier, speed restrictions on Starlink terminals previously disrupted Ukrainian military operations against Russian jet-powered drones. [13][14][17][18]
