An Iraqi court sentenced six French nationals to life in prison on Tuesday for belonging to the Islamic State group, according to France 24, AOL.co.uk, and L'Orient Today. France 24 and The National reported that a seventh French citizen was also sentenced to 15 years in prison during the same proceedings. [1][2][3][4][5]
The convicted individuals were part of a group of 47 French Islamic State suspects who were moved to Iraq from detention centres in northeast Syria last year, France 24 reported. That relocation effort was coordinated between United States forces and Iraqi authorities. [1]
A sentence of life imprisonment requires a convicted person to remain in prison for the rest of their natural life, although some jurisdictions allow for the possibility of early release. [7]
