The Aubrey Independent School District board of trustees announced on Wednesday that a new elementary school in Texas will be named after Marilyn Hampton. The New York Post reported that Hampton, a long-time custodian who retired this year, burst into tears when she learned about the honor during a school board meeting. [1]
Hampton was asked by Superintendent Shannon Saylor to roll out a red carpet in front of the speaker podium before the announcement was made. The New York Post reported that the request was similar to tasks Hampton had performed throughout her career. The facility, which was originally designated as Elementary School Number Five, will officially open next year as Marilyn Hampton Elementary School. [1]
The honor comes 39 years after Hampton first began working for the Aubrey Independent School District. According to the New York Post, she was completely surprised by the announcement during the board meeting. [1]
The state of Texas is home to the second-largest economy in the United States, with a state capital located in Austin. The district operates within the growing state public school system. [4]
