Russian authorities quarantine dozens after plague institute worker dies in Siberia

Russian authorities have placed dozens of people in quarantine after a laboratory worker at a plague research institute in Siberia fell ill and died under undisclosed circumstances. RTE reported that the incident has led the head of the health watchdog in Russia to travel directly to the Irkutsk region. [1]

Officials stated that the public health situation remains under control. According to RTE, plague is endemic to Siberia because the bacterium that causes the disease, Yersinia pestis, is present among small wild mammals throughout the region, which is also the location of the first known prehistoric human plague outbreak. Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium. Symptoms of the infection include fever, headache, shortness of breath, chest pain, and coughing up blood, which typically appear three to seven days after exposure to the bacterium. [6]
