The governor of Irkutsk, Igor Kobzev, stated that quarantine and preventive measures have been completed with no dangerous pathogens detected following the death of a research lab worker in Siberia, HuffPost reported. The statement comes after the suspicious death of a worker at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia raised global concerns regarding a possible pneumonic plague case, according to France 24 and HuffPost. [1][2]

HuffPost reported that the World Health Organization requested additional details from Russia concerning the worker's death. The agency is also seeking more information regarding a potential second suspected case of pneumonic plague. France 24 reported that the Kremlin has a long history of controlling public information and maintaining secrecy surrounding public health accidents. [1][2]

As FTMQ News reported earlier, the deceased worker was identified as 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, who fell ill at the research facility in Irkutsk. The World Health Organization previously assessed the public health risk outside of Russia as low, while virologist Marc Van Ranst noted that any link to a research laboratory makes such incidents serious. [8][9]

The Russian government faces ongoing criticism from international organizations and independent media over its human rights record and handling of state information. Public health watchdogs in Russia previously denied that special quarantine measures had been implemented before the local governor declared the preventive protocols complete. [2][5][8]
