Former NBA player Royce White plans to explore all legal options against the WNBA after league Commissioner Cathy Engelbert informed Republican members of Congress that he is ineligible to join the league because he is a man, Fox News reported. [1][2][4]

In an October 16 letter sent to lawmakers, Engelbert wrote that only women are eligible to play in the WNBA, stating that White and fellow former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom are both men, according to the New York Post and the Washington Examiner. The response came after Indiana Representative Marlin Stutzman and other Republican members of Congress requested clarification on the league eligibility guidelines. [2][4]

White told OutKick that Engelbert's letter fails to resolve his challenge to the league standards, Fox News reported. He called on the WNBA to clarify how it defines men and women, adding that he intends to hold the league and NBA community accountable to their stated standards. [1]

White is an American former professional basketball player who previously won the Republican Party nomination for the United States Senate in Minnesota in 2024. [9]
