Romanian authorities have uncovered a Russia-coordinated sabotage network responsible for a fire near a state-owned weapons factory, Al Jazeera reported on October 27. The Romanian Intelligence Service stated on October 26 that the blaze occurred on September 14 in the central city of Brasov. The fire took place at an industrial site close to the military facility. [1]
The intelligence agency said the fire was part of a broader campaign of Russian sabotage operations amid the invasion of Ukraine. According to Al Jazeera, officials stated that these operations target arms manufacturers and other sites of industrial and military importance in European countries supporting Ukraine. [1]
Western governments and intelligence agencies state that Russian military and intelligence services, particularly the GRU, organise acts of sabotage across Europe. These operations include arson, electronic interference, vandalism, and damage to railways, gas pipelines, and communication cables. Officials report that incidents executed by covert operatives or locally recruited perpetrators increased significantly during 2023 and 2024. [3]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, maritime incidents have also occurred near the Romanian coast. On October 15, eight crew members went missing after the San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader caught fire in the Black Sea, approximately 13 nautical miles east of Sulina, following suspected drone strikes.
