Eight crew members are missing out of 12 after a ship caught fire and suffered explosions in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania on Thursday morning. BBC News, the Kyiv Post, BGNES, MTV Lebanon, and Operativ Məlumat Mərkəzi all report that eight people are missing following the fire. [1][3][4][5][6]
BBC News reported that the vessel involved is the San Marino-flagged tanker Wine Trader. Naval authorities said the ship was located about 13 nautical miles, or 24 kilometers, east of the mouth of the River Danube at Sulina when it reported a fire and explosions. [1]
The western coast of the Black Sea has experienced multiple drone attacks over the past two weeks. BBC News reported that nearby ships gave unconfirmed reports that the tanker was hit by two drones, and swarms of Russian drones were detected nearby overnight near Snake Island in Ukraine. [1]
The incident comes amid ongoing maritime security issues in the region. Romanian authorities were already investigating suspected drone attacks on tankers off the Black Sea coast, as FTMQ News reported earlier. [1][10]
