Rioters launched fireworks at a building on the Meadow Well estate in North Shields after false rumours spread that it was being used to house asylum seekers, the Daily Mail reported. Northumbria Police stated that the pre-arranged disorder involved a large group of people on the North Tyneside estate. The Daily Mail also reported that police faced disorder across the country as rioters targeted emergency services, including ambulance crews, with fireworks. [1]

Emergency services across the United Kingdom had prepared for potential disorder on Bonfire Night, according to The Guardian. The publication reported that fire brigades faced resource shortages and concerns over worker safety following previous fireworks-related violence in cities such as Leeds and Edinburgh. Metro.co.uk reported that a man was forced to jump from a flat window to escape a blaze at a London takeaway restaurant during the evening. [5][6][7]

Bonfire Night is a name given to annual events marked by bonfires and fireworks, including Guy Fawkes Night in Great Britain. The observance commemorates the failure of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. As FTMQ News reported earlier, emergency services across the UK had prepared for potential attacks on firefighters ahead of the annual event. [10][12][13]

The disorder comes as the United Kingdom government considers reducing the maximum noise limit for shop-bought fireworks by 50 percent, BBC News reported. Campaigners have pressed for quieter private displays to protect animals and people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. BBC News added that approximately 20 million people in the UK use fireworks at home each year, and professionally organized displays would remain exempt from the proposed noise caps. [2]
