London Underground drivers will stage a series of 24-hour strikes starting on 26 November, BBC News reported. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union announced the walkouts following a dispute with London Underground over proposed driver working arrangements. [1]
Further strike dates are scheduled for 17 December, 19 December, 4 January, 6 January, 17 February, 23 February, and 25 February, according to BBC News. The dispute centres on London Underground plans to introduce four-day working weeks. [1]
The Rail, Maritime and Transport union stated that the proposed changes would force drivers to face longer hours behind the wheel and longer work days, BBC News reported. Transport for London said that the four-day working week plan was voluntary and would result in drivers working fewer hours overall. [1]
The London Underground walkout comes alongside other industrial actions in the United Kingdom transport and health services. As FTMQ News reported earlier, consultant doctors in England will also begin a 48-hour strike over pay and pensions on 25 November. [1][3]
