Retired New York City Police Department detective Victor Romero posted $1 million bail on Friday and was released from jail, the New York Post reported. The 62-year-old retired narcotics detective is accused of shooting and killing 46-year-old Koran Irvine during a road rage incident on the George Washington Bridge. Newsday, the New York Daily News, and Gothamist also reported that Mr Romero was released after posting bail. [1][3][4][5]
According to the New York Post, Mr Romero was initially charged with murder, but his charges were downgraded to manslaughter. The New York Post reported that the victim was a Con Edison worker and a father of two who died after Mr Romero allegedly shot him in a drive-by shooting and fled the scene. [1]
As FTMQ News reported earlier, the shooting occurred on the bridge after an apparent burst of road rage. Mr Irvine was an off-duty Con Edison worker living in Rockland County. Mr Romero was previously arrested while driving a Range Rover owned by his employer, QVT Financial. [7][8]
The George Washington Bridge opened to traffic in 1931 and features 14 vehicular lanes across two decks. It accommodates over 100 million vehicles every year, making it the busiest vehicular bridge in the world. [6]
According to the New York Daily News and the New York Post, the downgrading of the charges and the release of Mr Romero on bail drew outrage from the family of Mr Irvine. [1][4]
