Race favourite Point of Law has won the 166th Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse. The BBC and ABC News Australia reported that Australian jockey Ethan Brown rode the British stallion to victory after coming from the middle of the pack to take the lead with a few hundred metres remaining. The Guardian and ABC News Australia both confirmed that Point of Law chased down Royal Supremacy to secure the win. [1][3][4][6]

Point of Law was previously owned by King Charles before being sold earlier this year for an undisclosed sum, BBC News reported. ABC News Australia and The Guardian both reported that trainer Ciaron Maher prepared the winner and secured a top three finish in the race. [1][3][6]

Jockey Ethan Brown previously survived a severe fall at Flemington during the 2023 Australian Guineas, ABC News Australia reported. He underwent emergency surgery in hospital and missed six months of racing before returning to the sport. [4]

The Melbourne Cup has been held in Australia since 1861, according to BBC News. It carries a prize purse of 10.2 million Australian dollars, making it the third richest race in Australia, though it is widely regarded as the nation's most prestigious contest. [1]
