Spain will grant specific paid medical leave from December for female workers who experience incapacitating health conditions related to menopause.

Women in Spain who suffer from severe health issues linked to menopause will be allowed to take specific paid medical leave starting on 1 December 2026, Euronews reported. The new labour measure grants financial benefits starting from the second day of leave. Workers do not need to have a minimum period of prior social security contributions to qualify for the benefit. [1]
The government approved the reform on 20 October 2026 as part of efforts to expand legal protections for female workers, according to Euronews. Other European nations do not currently offer a similar benefit for menopause-related leave. [1]
The policy change follows earlier issues regarding women's health care in the country. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Spain experienced widespread shortages of hormone replacement therapies, which affected hundreds of thousands of women due to supply chain problems with treatments such as the estradiol spray Lenzetto.
