Four mechatronics engineering students in New Zealand built a robot that solved a 4x4x4 Rubik's cube in 9.8 seconds, UPI reported on October 19, 2026. The time established a new world record for solving the puzzle with a machine. [1]

The fourth-year students at the University of Canterbury are Caleb Everitt, Hayden Watson, Maz Cameron, and Johann Torres. According to UPI, the group decided to build the device after watching a social media video that showed a robot solving a 4x4x4 cube in 45 seconds. [1]

The team discovered that their time was a world record and noted that it was faster than the human record of 15 seconds. Maz Cameron told the university news service that the team knew robots could perform better than humans and wanted to break that gap. [1]

A robot is a machine, often controlled by a computer, that automatically carries out a complex series of actions. Most robots prioritize functionality over aesthetics rather than taking a humanoid form. [2]
