A New York City public school teacher was among protesters who disrupted a vigil in Union Square honoring victims of the October 7 attacks in Israel. According to the New York Post, special education teacher Mia Kurzer of The Heritage School in East Harlem was videotaped at the Manhattan demonstration. [1]

The New York Post reported that protesters at the event cheered for Hamas and chanted slogans including globalize the intifada. Some individuals at the demonstration carried flags representing Hamas and Hezbollah, leading to a formal complaint filed with the Department of Education. [1]

The protest occurs amid broader demonstrations surrounding the Gaza conflict, which began after Hamas carried out an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. As FTMQ News reported earlier, anti-Israel demonstrators previously confronted local officials at the Union Square vigil area during anniversary events. [7][8][9]

Critics have called for action regarding staff participation in such demonstrations. Moshe Spern stated that Jewish students and staff are entitled to a school that does not employ individuals who join mobs outside synagogues and display political symbols related to October 7 inside school buildings, according to the New York Post.
