Anti-Israel demonstrators targeted New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani near Union Square on Wednesday during an October 7 vigil, Fox News reported. More than 100 protesters marched from City Hall to the event and shouted outside barricades, calling the mayor a traitor and accusing him of genocide. [1]

The vigil was organized as an evening of mourning for Israelis and Palestinians killed in the October 7, 2023, attacks and the subsequent war, according to Fox News. Politico and the New York Post both reported that Mayor Mamdani faced widespread criticism and outrage from Jewish leaders and politicians after releasing an anniversary statement that accused Israel of war crimes and genocide. [1][2][4][5][6]

The confrontations occurred on the third anniversary of the Hamas attack in Israel, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages, according to the New York Post and the Washington Examiner. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Mayor Mamdani had planned to attend an October 7 vigil and meet with Palestinian New Yorkers on the anniversary. [3][7][14]

Meanwhile, New York state politicians are pushing for a permanent memorial in Brooklyn to honor the victims of the October 7 attacks, the New York Post reported. Democratic State Senator Sam Sutton announced the initiative during a press conference on Wednesday, noting that the proposed site remains subject to approval by the mayor. [3]
