A French far-left member of the European Parliament faced an investigation after allegedly throwing Israeli and European Union flags to the floor at an October 7 memorial exhibition. The Daily Mail and The Times of Israel reported that the incident involved a French EU lawmaker with a Palestinian background, identified by NewsCord as Rima Hassan. NewsCord and POLITICO.eu reported that European Parliament President Roberta Metsola moved to address the situation following the removal. [5][8][9][10]

Euronews reported that Israel's Ambassador to France Joshua Zarka responded to the mounting controversy surrounding the flag removal in Brussels. Tensions remained high across international events as communities marked the third anniversary of the 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage according to Euronews. [1][5]

Diplomatic reflections on the anniversary occurred elsewhere as well. The Guardian reported that Israel's ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, expressed hope for a return to traditional friendship between the two countries during an anniversary gathering in Sydney. [2][3]

The European Parliament consists of 720 members representing the electorate of the European Union. Its primary plenary sessions take place in Strasbourg, while committee work is conducted in Brussels. [11][14]
