Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed has launched a new political action committee named Habibi PAC, according to Al Jazeera, The Hill, and The New Republic. Al Jazeera reported that a Federal Election Commission filing dated Thursday registered the entity as a leadership PAC sponsored by El-Sayed. He established the committee days after becoming the first Muslim member of the United States Senate. [1][2][10][11]

Al Jazeera reported that political action committees raise and spend money to support or oppose political candidates. Leadership PACs operate separately from a candidate's personal campaign organisation. Al Jazeera noted that research group OpenSecrets indicates ambitious lawmakers utilize leadership PACs to gain clout among colleagues and to bolster efforts for leadership positions or committee chairmanships. [1]

The Daily Mail reported that El-Sayed spoke to CNN on Thursday regarding plans to question Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. El-Sayed cited concerns over staffing cuts at the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He pointed to an outbreak of cyclospora linked to lettuce earlier this year, which caused severe illness and affected Michigan heavily. [4]

El-Sayed is an epidemiologist and politician who won the Michigan Senate election against Republican candidate Mike Rogers, as FTMQ News reported earlier. The New York Post reported that El-Sayed selected a former Kamala Harris campaign aide to help lead his transition team. [7][11][14]
