Two members of the Democratic Socialists of America won mayoral elections in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., Fox News reported. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman defeated incumbent mayor Karen Bass, and Janeese Lewis George won the mayoral race in Washington, D.C. The results mean four of the 20 largest cities in the United States now have socialist leaders. [1]
Fox News reported that Raman will take office in December to lead Los Angeles, a city of approximately 4 million residents. Lewis George will become the mayor of Washington, D.C., which has a population of roughly 700,000 residents. They will join existing DSA-affiliated mayors in Seattle and New York City. [1]
Raman served on the Los Angeles City Council starting in 2020, as FTMQ News reported earlier. She will also be the first South Asian mayor of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America is the second-largest chapter in the organization, behind the New York City chapter which has more than 15,000 members. [2][5]
