Republican United States Senate nominee Michele Tafoya challenged Democratic nominee Peggy Flanagan over state fraud during their debate on Friday, ahead of the midterm election. Fox News and The Daily Signal reported that the clash focused on an estimated 9 billion dollar fraud scandal in Minnesota, with Tafoya criticizing Flanagan for her oversight as lieutenant governor. As FTMQ News reported earlier, the event was hosted by NPR News, and real clear politics polling showed Flanagan leading Tafoya by 2.6 percentage points. [1][3][8]

During the debate, Tafoya criticized Flanagan for expressing concern about access to benefit programs such as Medicaid and SNAP after large scale fraud occurred under state administration, according to Fox News. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Flanagan responded by stating that Governor Tim Walz had oversight and that responsibility ultimately rested with him. [1][8]

Separate reporting by the New York Post noted that information recently emerged regarding the family background of Flanagan. Old newspaper accounts and court records published by Alpha News revealed that Flanagan's late grandfather, John Jacob Hartmann, spent decades in psychiatric custody, escaped twice, and was suspected in multiple killings, although he was never charged. [2]

The state has faced various fraud allegations regarding federally funded social services programs in recent years. The largest case, involving the Feeding Our Future non profit organization, resulted in 69 convictions out of 80 suspects indicted by July 2026, with total losses estimated between 250 million dollars and 350 million dollars.
