Malaysia and Singapore are taking increasingly opposing approaches toward drug offences, Al Jazeera reported. Malaysia repealed the mandatory death penalty in 2023, which led to the re-sentencing of more than 700 drug offenders who had previously been condemned to hang. Singapore, on the other hand, insists that tough legislation deters substance abuse. [1]

The Malaysian government is currently considering further reforms to its national drug policy, according to Al Jazeera. At the same time, the number of executions for drug trafficking in neighbouring Singapore has accelerated in recent years. [1]

Singapore is an island country and city-state located in Southeast Asia, bordering the Straits of Johor and Malaysia to the north, Wikipedia notes. Al Jazeera examined the personal impact of these contrasting legal frameworks by following the stories of two death row inmates and their families in both nations. [1][5]
