Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers targeted for NC State coaching job

Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers has emerged as a primary candidate for the head football coach opening at North Carolina State University, Fox News and the New York Post reported. The university athletic director, Boo Corrigan, decided to open the position after firing former head coach Dave Doeren on Saturday. [1][2]

According to the New York Post, On3 first reported on Friday night that Rivers had become the central focus of the Wolfpack search. Fox News reported that NC State donors are actively gathering Name, Image, and Likeness resources while gauging interest from the former quarterback. On Friday evening, Rivers was seen in Fairhope, Alabama, walking his son Gunner Rivers onto the field for a senior night event. [1][2]

The New York Post reported that Doeren was dismissed following a 31-28 loss to Stanford, which left NC State with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-3 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Rivers, who is 44 years old, played four seasons at NC State and his son has committed to join the program in 2027. [1][2]
