Aston Villa have announced that they will initiate legal action against former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher, according to reports from Al Jazeera, The Guardian, and the BBC. The Premier League club accused the television pundit of making unacceptable insults toward the team and their supporters. [1][2][3][8]

The dispute follows comments made by Carragher on the Stick to Football podcast, where Al Jazeera and The Guardian report that he told Villa supporters to shut up. The Daily Mail and BBC Sport reported that Carragher suggested Villa manager Unai Emery should consider taking the manager job at Manchester United, with the Daily Mail adding he believed Emery should replace Michael Carrick. [1][2][3][5]

Carragher also stated on the podcast that Aston Villa will never be Manchester United and argued that a hierarchy exists in football, Al Jazeera reported. The Guardian and BBC Sport reported that Villa responded with a statement on X signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris. The club added that they would not allow anyone to stop their ascension in English and European football, according to BBC Sport. [1][2][3]

Aston Villa Football Club was founded in 1874 and plays at Villa Park in Birmingham, having won the Football League First Division seven times and the European Cup once. Billionaires Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens took control of the club in 2018, and Villa subsequently qualified for the Champions League for the second time in three years, according to the Daily Mail.
