A Russian ballistic missile struck a power plant in Kyiv on Tuesday, killing at least two people and injuring about 20 others, France 24 reported. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine received no early warning about the strike from its Western allies. France 24, Politico, The Guardian, Euronews, and the New York Post all reported that Kyiv received no advance notice from its partners regarding the attack. [1][2][3][4][5][6]
The strike on the capital hit civilian infrastructure after dark, according to The Guardian. In a separate attack on Tuesday, local authorities and Euronews reported that a Russian strike on an educational institution in Rivne injured at least 25 people. Zelensky said five ballistic missiles hit civilian sites in Kyiv during the assault, as reported by Euronews and The Guardian. [3][4]
France 24 noted that Ukraine relies heavily on Western intelligence, particularly from the United States, to detect incoming Russian strikes and identify targets. The lack of warning comes after reports that the United States threatened to halt intelligence sharing and arms shipments to Ukraine, according to The Guardian, the New York Post, and The Kyiv Independent. [1][3][6][7]
Russia has systematically targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure and civilian areas since launching its full invasion, according to Wikipedia. These attacks reduced Ukraine to a third of its pre-war electricity generating capacity by mid-2024. As FTMQ News reported earlier, Zelensky previously accused Moscow of breaking a claimed energy ceasefire by striking power plants. [9][10]
